I will start with this touching interview to a great man, Cesare Prandelli:


Prandelli: 'La mia vita senza Manuela'

La malattia, le cure, il dolore, la fine. E l'obbligo di ricominciare

Questa è la storia di un uomo e una donna. Come ce ne sono tante. È la storia di un amore. Come a volte esistono. È la storia di un dolore. Come quelle che prima o poi ci sbattono addosso perché non può esserci una vita senza dolore. L'uomo si chiama Cesare Prandelli. Ha cinquant'anni. Alla fine della terza media voleva iscriversi al liceo artistico, si è ritrovato invece geometra perché la mamma gli raccomandava: il diploma, Cesare, il diploma... Voleva diventare architetto perché gli è sempre piaciuto pensare, creare, costruire qualcosa. Anche solo un'idea. Ha fatto invece il calciatore. Ha vinto con la Juventus qualche scudetto e una coppa campioni, si è distrutto le ginocchia e ha smesso presto, senza barare, a trentadue anni. Oggi è l'allenatore della Fiorentina, ma qui se potessero lo farebbero sindaco, presidente di tutti i posti in cui è previsto un presidente e, perché no?, persino papa e santo, naturalmente subito.

La donna si chiama Manuela Caffi, è sua moglie. È morta all'ora di pranzo del 26 novembre dell'anno scorso. Aveva quarantacinque anni. Quel giorno era un lunedì, il giorno in cui i calciatori e gli allenatori si riposano. "Fino alle dieci della domenica era lucidissima. Io e i miei figli durante le ultime ore ci siamo messi nel letto con lei. L'abbracciavamo, la accarezzavo, le parlavamo di continuo. I medici della terapia del dolore, che lei chiamava i suoi angeli, ci hanno spiegato che i malati terminali perdono per ultimo il senso dell'udito, ma riconoscono solamente le voci dei familiari, quelle degli estranei si trasformano in un rumore metallico. Porto dentro di me le sue ultime parole. Ma non riesco a dirle, a farle uscire. È troppo dura".



Dopo tre mesi è la prima volta che Cesare Prandelli accetta di raccontare la sua Manuela. Nella sala riunioni della sede della Fiorentina. Una t-shirt bianca e un maglione arancione, il fisico da ragazzo, lo sguardo sulla fede che porta al dito, un bicchiere d'acqua sul tavolo che a un tratto si rovescia e lui va nello sgabuzzino, prende uno straccio e asciuga il pavimento mettendosi in ginocchio. Si deve pur ricominciare, da qualche parte, in qualche modo.

Potremmo partire dalla terra, la sua. Da Orzinuovi, provincia di Brescia.
"Di lì si parte e lì si torna. Dove sono nato e cresciuto, dove vivo ancora nella casa dei miei. Papà è morto che avevo sedici anni, mamma sta con me. A Orzinuovi sono Cesare e basta. C'è la piazza Vittorio Emanuele, una bella piazza con i portici. Manuela l'ho conosciuta là, al bar, una domenica pomeriggio. Giocavo in B con la Cremonese, tornavo dalla partita, avevo voglia di una cioccolata calda. Lei era con una sua amica, ci siamo soltanto guardati, ci siamo piaciuti subito. Il giorno dopo con una scusa sono andato a prenderla a scuola. Avevo diciott'anni, lei non ancora quindici. Non ci siamo più lasciati".

Quando vi siete sposati?
"Nell'82. Ero alla Juve. I miei testimoni sono stati Antonio Cabrini e Domenico Pezzolla, mio compagno a Cremona. Ora fa l'ambulante, vende formaggi".

Mai una crisi, mai un tradimento?
"In trent'anni abbiamo litigato una volta sola, colpa di una racchetta da tennis. Se mi chiede se le ho messo le corna le rispondo di no. Se per tradimento invece intende la mancata condivisione di una scelta e di una idea, allora le dico di sì, che a volte credo di averlo fatto. Nell'educazione dei figli, per esempio. Su questo piano sarò sempre in difetto nei confronti di mia moglie".

Padri e figli: che cosa ha imparato dai suoi genitori?
"Da mio padre il rispetto per chi lavora, spero di averlo fatto mio. Da mia madre la fisicità dell'amore, il non vergognarsi di volere bene. Dimostrarlo con il cuore, la testa, le mani".

E che cos'è l'amore?
"Credo ci siano diversi tipi di amore. Quello per una donna, quello per i figli, quello per gli amici. Ho scoperto che molte persone hanno paura di amare, hanno paura di vivere l'amore. Perché in amore devi dare, devi essere altruista. Forse è più facile non amare. Siamo spesso prigionieri del nostro egoismo".

Che cosa le ha insegnato Manuela?
"Tutto. Ho sempre le tasche vuote, non un soldo. Mai usato il bancomat, i soldi me li dava lei. Qualche giorno fa sono stato costretto a farmi prestare cinquanta euro da un collaboratore della società per fare benzina. Non mi sono ancora abituato... Manuela mi ha insegnato a usare le parole. Mi diceva: Cesare, la cosa più importante è sapere che cosa si vuole. Domandarselo e avere il coraggio di darsi le risposte. Quando sono diventato responsabile del settore giovanile dell'Atalanta mi sembrava di toccare il cielo con un dito. Poi mi offrirono il Lecce. Le dissi: mi piacerebbe provare, ma solo se tu vieni con me. I bambini erano piccoli. Andiamo, mi rispose, ma promettimi che terrai i nostri figli fuori dal mondo del calcio".

A lei che cosa non piace di questo suo mondo?
"L'esasperazione, le polemiche, i processi, l'arroganza, la stupidità, l'oblio. Quando giocavo io ci divertivamo di più, tra compagni di squadra ci si frequentava dopo le partite, gli allenamenti. Mischiavamo le nostre solitudini. Oggi i calciatori lo fanno molto di meno. Questo mondo ha dato lavoro a tanti, ma tanti si prendono troppo sul serio. Eppure fai un mestiere che ti piace, ti danno un sacco di soldi, sei un privilegiato. Vivi una vita che non è normale. Se ho una qualità è quella di saper scegliere i miei abiti mentali. Non posso assumere un modo di essere che non è il mio. Non riesco a fingere, a mordermi la lingua, a mettere su il disco dell'ipocrisia".

Parlavate spesso di politica, lei e sua moglie?
"Poco. Ho votato la sinistra più di una volta, ho avuto ad un certo punto simpatia per il centrodestra. Sono stato un ondivago, come vede. Vorrei una politica liberata dall'ideologia. Non mi chieda di più. Non sono preparato".

Lei è ricco?
"Sto bene, molto bene. Ma la ricchezza non mi interessa. Mi preme la tranquillità economica dei miei figli. Nicolò ha ventitré anni, studia da manager dello sport. Carolina ne ha ventuno, fa lettere all'università e adora la danza. Non voglio diventare ricco. Voglio cercare di vincere qualcosa, questo sì".

Mi hanno raccontato che prima di prendere Capello, la Juventus la voleva come allenatore. Di fronte alla scrivania di Moggi lei sparò una richiesta altissima, Moggi si alzò, le strinse la mano e le disse arrivederci. È vero?
"Sì. Per la Juve avrei firmato in bianco, ma sapevo che non mi avrebbero preso. Chiesi quella cifra per andare a scoprire le loro carte. Non mi presero, come avevo previsto".

Quando si è ammalata Manuela?
"Sette anni fa. Allenavo il Venezia. Un nodulo a un seno. Sembrava routine. Operazione a Brescia. Meno di due anni dopo un problema a un linfonodo. Nuova operazione, parecchie metastasi, chemioterapia. Un disastro".

La Roma per qualche mese, poi le dimissioni. Perché?
"Manuela voleva stare a casa. Facemmo un patto, le dissi che se le cure fossero state invasive sarei stato ogni minuto al suo fianco. Era lei la mia priorità. La sua vita era la mia vita. Tornai a Orzinuovi. Molti si sorpresero, per me invece fu una scelta naturale. Il calcio a volte ha paura della normalità".

C'è stato un momento in cui ha creduto che Manuela si sarebbe salvata?
"Sì, dopo Parigi e un interminabile calvario di terapie chemioterapiche. I medici ci diedero molte speranze. Lei stava meglio. Venimmo a Firenze. Per quasi tre anni le cose sono andate bene. La scorsa primavera la situazione è improvvisamente precipitata, a maggio il tumore ha colpito il fegato. È stato l'inizio della fine. Da allora la lotta è stata soltanto contro il dolore, un dolore devastante, non più contro la malattia".

A chi altri avete chiesto aiuto in questi anni?
"A Dio. Siamo andati a Spello, da frate Elia. Lunghe, dolcissime chiacchierate. Sedute di preghiera. Emozionanti, commoventi. Manuela, io, i due ragazzi. Io ho la fede, l'abitudine alla preghiera. Lei era invece un po' come San Tommaso, ma l'incontro con frate Elia è stato straordinario. L'ha cambiata. Credo che senza di lui la mia Manu sarebbe morta prima".

Ora lei come sta?
"Sto. Quasi tutta la mia famiglia è venuta a Firenze, respiro quando sono con Carolina e Nicolò. Cerchiamo di capire assieme come ricominciare. Mi danno sollievo il campo, i ragazzi, le partite. Da solo mi sento sperduto".

E crede che rimarrà da solo?
"Adesso le posso solo rispondere di sì. Non riesco a immaginarmi con un'altra donna accanto. Penso che una persona che abbiamo tanto amato continui a vivere dentro di noi fino a quando moriremo a nostra volta".

A Firenze la strada principale che conduce allo stadio si chiama Viale dei Mille. Per un lungo tratto a ogni albero è appeso un cartellone dell'Associazione tumori della Toscana. Raffigura Cesare Prandelli sul prato del campo. È in giacca blu e cardigan viola. Non sorride. Con il braccio destro saluta i tifosi della curva Fiesole. È il suo modo di dire grazie.

Ferrari heads for Florence

Roma contract rebel Matteo Ferrari has been linked with a move to Fiorentina as a replacement for Tomas Ujfalusi, who has also refused to renew his current deal.

Transfer market guru Ernesto Bronzetti, who mainly deals with Milan, made the revelation in an interview with Radio Radio TV.

Papa Waigo’s Florentine renaissance

Fiorentina’s new hero Papa Waigo is celebrating his resurgence at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The Senegalese striker has was the star man for the Viola as he secured three points in Week 25’s Tuscan derby against Livorno.

Having opened his account, the 23-year-old seems to have a taste for goal and also found the net in yesterday’s derby win over Juventus.

Football Italia – UEFA Cup, Last 16, 2nd leg - 12/3/08

Everton cancelled out Fiorentina's 2-0 first leg lead, but Sebastien Frey's save took the Viola to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on penalties.

The Viola had a 2-0 first leg lead going into Goodison Park and kept the same line-up as Adrian Mutu was still injured, but the home side were without Tim Cahill and brought back Mikel Arteta. Joining in the Liverfekkin'wankscum atmosphere, Fiorentina wore an all-red away strip. The history books bode well for Cesare Prandelli, as they were unbeaten on their travels in the UEFA Cup this season and Everton had never scored against Italian opposition.

As expected, Everton got off to a strong start as Leon Osman's effort was deflected out for a corner. They took an early lead in chaotic fashion after 16 minutes, as Steven Pienaar's cross squirmed past an uncertain Sebastien Frey and Andy Johnson bundled the ball over the line with his chest.

Their tails were up and Arteta blasted over after a Tomas Ujfalusi error, then Frey made up for his error by palming away a curling Arteta free kick that dipped over the wall.

Johnson had penalty appeals waved away, as he seemed to jump at Manuel Pasqual, and Frey had his palms stung by Osman's follow-up. Philip Jagielka nodded an Arteta free kick over.

Fiorentina were under pressure, but created a great chance on 33 minutes when Manuel Pasqual got away down the left channel and Martin Jorgensen's volley was straight at Tim Howard.

Frey is known primarily for his shot-stopping skills and showed that when he had to get down to parry a Yakubu Ayegbeni run through the middle. Johnson's header from a corner was well over, but Alessandro Gamberini needed a great tackle to block Johnson from eight yards.

Everton did get the ball in the back of the net in first half stoppages, but Arteta was offside when he gathered Frey's one-handed save from Johnson and rolled across for Yakubu.

Giampaolo Pazzini replaced an ineffective Christian Vieri at the break, but the Under-21 international needed a confidence booster after two shocking misses in Serie A this month.

There was an early scare as an Arteta corner clipped Jorgensen guarding the line. There were penalty appeals for an Ujfalusi handling offence, but as the ball visibly ricocheted on to his elbow it could not have been considered a foul.

Fiorentina were furious as Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was elbowed in the back of the head, but Everton continued play and went on the counter.

Osvaldo charged down a Howard clearance to put the goalkeeper under pressure, but there was danger at the other end when Johnson's shot ricocheted off the inside of Dainelli's leg and Fiorentina scrambled clear for a corner.

The home side had been threatening it with Arteta and he drew the tie level on aggregate with a cracking angled drive from 25 metres that ricocheted in off the inside of the far post, giving Frey no chance.

It was almost 3-0, as Frey had to clear Yakubu's close-range finish off the line. Moments later he performed another stunning save on Yakubu's header.

Howard's saves kept the tie alive in Florence and he needed another fine one-handed stop to tip Pazzini's glancing header out from under the crossbar. From the resulting corner Dainelli nodded past the far post.

Frey misjudged another Arteta set-piece and Ujfalusi clattered into the post as he cleared the danger. Yakubu was booked three minutes from time for a truly embarrassing dive in the box without the slightest contact.

Yobo's header from an Arteta free kick flashed past the upright, but the tie had to go to extra time. Fiorentina threw on Massimo Gobbi for Zdravko Kuzmanovic, who scored in the first leg but did precious little on British soil. Pazzini tested Howard from six yards and had another shot off target as he slipped.

Yakubu was clear on goal after the ball fell kindly, but Gamberini and Ujfalusi did enough to block his path. Soon after Yakubu wastefully blasted over from the long ball game.

For the second half of extra time, Mario Alberto Santana replaced Jorgensen for a more attacking approach and Victor Anichebe took over from Pienaar.

Frey had to prevent an own goal, as Gamberini intercepted Johnson's cross for Yakubu and hit it against his own goalkeeper. Pazzini cut in and whistled his low shot a yard past the near post, but Thomas Gravesen came on just to take a penalty as it went to a shoot-out after 120 minutes.

In a tie where both goalkeepers proved crucial - Howard preventing Fiorentina from gaining a much larger advantage in Florence and Frey performing well at Goodison Park - it seemed fitting it should be decided in this manner.

Yakubu hit the inside of the post and Frey saved Jagielka's effort with one strong hand as it was heading under the bar, giving Fiorentina a double advantage. Mario Alberto Santana maintained their 100 per cent record from the spot to send the Viola through to the quarter-finals.

I agree, fiorentina did deserve to advance and I'm happy they did. They completely dominated the first leg. I was just disappointed at the effort put forth in the second leg. But when you have an osvaldo-vieiri/pazzini front line you're going to struggle.

Anyways, I hope they go far in the uefa cup. If they do they'll probably end up finishing out of the CL spots, meaning italy will be represented by their 4 strongest teams. No offense to fiorentina but I'd rather see juve and milan in CL. I think both juve and milan have a better chance of progressing further than fiorentina would if they got the CL spot.

Fiorentina to remember Franchi

Twenty-five years on from the death of Artemio Franchi, and with the patronage of UEFA, ACF Fiorentina are to organise a special event, on 30 July, to commemorate the man who was UEFA President from 1973 to 1983.

Great figure
In the Florence stadium named after him, the Artemio Franchi Memorial match will take place between ACF Fiorentina and FC Barcelona in the presence of the UEFA Executive Committee and UEFA President Michel Platini. The Spanish club accepted with pleasure the honour of participating in the initiative proposed by Fiorentina, and by UEFA, to remember one of the great figures in the history of world football. Barcelona president Joan Laporta said: "We are happy to have received the invite from President Andrea Della Valle and UEFA President Michel Platini, and to be able to remember together Artemio Franchi with a sporting event without precedent."

Fair Play
The match will take place under the banners of Fair Play and anti-racism. These values are not only valid in the spirit of 2008, European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, but are also an expression of the union of intent that binds together UEFA and Fiorentina in promoting the culture of fair play and respect for opponents. A few months ago, Fiorentina president Andrea Della Valle expressed to Mr Platini the desire to host an event in memory of Artemio Franchi in Florence, obtaining not long after the unanimous approval of the entire UEFA Executive Committee. "For Fiorentina it is an honour to be able to organise and host such an event in memory of Artemio Franchi," confirmed Mr Della Valle.

Guided football
This summer will be the 25th anniversary of the passing away of the Italian sporting official who guided football at the highest possible levels at national and international level. He was italian Football Federation president and FIFA vice-president as well as UEFA President until his tragic death in an automobile accident in August 1983.

Montolivo focuses on Fiorentina

Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo seems to have missed the cut for Euro 2008 and is focusing on delivering results for the Viola. There will be few changes to Roberto Donadoni’s squad before the summer’s trip to Austria and Switzerland and Montolivo will surely have to wait until 2010 to represent his nation at a major tournament. The 23-year-old made his Italy debut in last October’s friendly win over South Africa and has made an impressive contribution to Fiorentina’s superb campaign.

Santana agent claims Spurs contact

Fiorentina star Mario Santana's agent claims Tottenham have been in contact regarding the promising winger. The Argentinian has obtained an Italian passport after marrying a woman from his country of work and is believed to be on the wanted list of several clubs.

"I also read the news myself," agent Filippo Cavadini said of the link with Spurs. "I have contacts with Tottenham but, at the moment, I have not asked the player. "I do not know if they have talked with Fiorentina.

"Santana is often followed by scouts from The Premiershit as he will become a member of the European Community and will be even more attractive," he told calciomercato.com.

"Currently, there is nothing and I think he should stay at Fiorentina." The 26-year-old has also played for San Lorenzo, Venezia, Palermo and Chievo Verona.
