We have to understand first of all that Italpetroli controls A.S. Roma.
I do not want to cover most of that old ground. The facts are quite simple to understand. In order to save Roma Franco Sensi, even after selling of some personal assets, had to make a deal with Capitalia because he could not pay back all of the debt accumulated over the years during his ownership of Roma. Therefore, he made a deal whereby Capitalia would receive a 49% share of his oil company, Italpetroli, derive income from the company and also earmark millions to pay off Roma's debt. The deal provided a time frame whereby Sensi would eventually pay off most of the debt and take back the 49% share which was placed in trust, not actually transferred over to Capitalia. If not, Capitalia could exercise an option given to them by Franco Sensi to take another 2% of Italpetroli, giving them the majority share of the company.
Now, the payoff schedule was to expire 18 months ago. At that time, the Sensi's approached Capitalia and told them there was no way they could come up with the money, 150 million euro, by the expiration date. They asked for more time to make this payment. Capitalia agreed not to exercise its option last year and the granted the Sensi's another 18 months to payoff the debt. Remember, Cesare Geronzi, then president of Capitalia, is a close personal friend of Franco Sensi. It was Geronzi who convinced Sensi to buy Roma in the first place. As some of you may remember, I have often said he was the best friend Roma ever had because if not for him, Roma would have filed for Bankruptcy protection and probably demoted to Serie C. We were looking at Napoli or Fiorentina type tragedy.
Anyway, it appears as though the 18 months has expired and it is time for the Sensi's to pay. Now, Cesare Geronzi does not have the same power within UniCredito as he had with Capitalia. Alessandro Profumo, an Inter fan and friend of Moratti, is the most powerful man at UniCredito. You may remember, at the time of the merger I said this was going to be bad for Roma. Well, on 25 January, UniCredito decided not to exercsie the option for an additional 2% of Italpetroli, and basically told Rosella to find the money or we are going to force you to sell off assets to pay us. One of those assets is Roma.
The debt of Italpetroli is not all Roma debt. Quite frankly, I do not know how this debt was accumulated by Italpetroli. Roma is actually doing quite well which is why it may be the first asset to be sold. I am not sure the amount is accurate by I know the Sensi's were required to pay off most of this debt 18 months ago. My sense is that the press is making more out of this than its worth. I firmly believe that an accomodation will be made to restructure the deal and allow the Sensi's to keep Roma. That is unless Rosella has pissed everybody off and they do not want to make a deal. I am trying my best to get reliable information and I will let you all know as soon as possible. I do know for a fact that negotiations have been ongoing to restructure the debt.

Food for thought: which would you rather see is Serie A, an Italian team with foreign ownership or a foreign team with Italian ownership (cough cough Inter cough)?
